Lessons Learned in 300 Square Feet

Our journey to Orlando (from Houston) is finally over. As with most things in my life, I always try to learn something from my experiences.

Well, let me tell you, this has been quite an experience!

From August 1 until September 18 (when we moved in), our family of two adults and two teenagers, two cats and one dog lived in our 300 sq ft fifth wheel camping trailer. If you have never seen one, it consists of one bedroom, one bathroom, a sofa bed, a dinette and a kitchen - all, of course, on a miniature size. There is, obviously, nowhere near the storage you'd find in your home.

During this time my son started 7th grade and my daughter started college, so we had to have room for school clothes, work clothes (for hubby) and play clothes. Other than that, we were very limited in what we could keep in there. (We did have satellite TV, a DVD player, Gamecube and a microwave...so we weren't completely roughing it!)

Somebody's going to kill someone after two weeks, was my initial thought. However, I was surprised and amazed at what I learned from this exercise:

1. There were very little material things I missed. All this STUFF we all thought we had to have was rather immaterial after all. Think of all the money we could have saved over the years if we had not needed such a big house to keep our STUFF.

2. You can do almost anything for a limited period of time. My point here is that many people are in debt, but are unable to give up the cable, DSL, Friday night out with the guys, etc. If you set a time-table and know you only need sacrifice for a certain period of time, you CAN do it!

3. The fabric of our memories is made of experiences between people - not STUFF!

We will always remember the symphony of ducks which would call to my son every morning, as he was the keeper of the bread. Or Jack the stray cat who visited us twice a day to be fed. Or laughing at the moat created around our camper whenever it rained....which it did EVERY SINGLE DAY!!!

These wonderful memories cost not a dime, but will stay with us forever.

4. The library or local bookstore is a great place to spend some time and catch up on some reading for free. Likewise, it is a quiet place to study if four people eat at your desk!

Now, my point is not to sell your house and live in 300 sq ft. But realize that, in the grand scheme of things, all those possessions we think we must have or we must buy for our children are just STUFF. They are just accessories to our lives.....lives which gain their substance through relationships with others.

So, if money is tight, give up your STUFF for awhile. You may decide you don't ever need it back!
