A Marketing Tip From Ace Hardware

This weekend I opened my door to a fresh-faced college kid who handed me a bag of goodies from the local Ace Hardware store. They just wanted to thank me for my business and hoped I had stop by again soon.

Now, Home Depot is only a mile away and this is where I usually shop. But, I felt a bit obligated to visit Ace Hardware since they had been so nice. Guess what? They are very competitive on a number of items.

Anyway got to talking to Bill Murff, the owner, and told him I thought his idea was great. He had contacted a number of his suppliers and they had sent him free samples, tip sheets, etc. to include. Still, he had to pay to assemble and pass these out.

I suggested that if he does this again, why not put together a list of recommended plumbers, electricians, remodelers, etc. This would be a great list (maybe with a magnet on the back) that would be a perfect tie in with a hardware store. The payback? He could have them pay for a listing, which would pay for his promotion costs.

Now let us apply this to a networking business:

What would be a tie-in for your business?
If you are a nutritional company, maybe you could approach health food stores, chiropractors, massage therapists, or other businesspeople who would be of interest to health conscious people.
Can you provide samples? Put in a brochure? Offer a discount coupon?
Put some freebies together with a nice list of recommended health companies (with your company name and phone number at the top, of course), and introduce yourself to the community and/or thank your customers. Let the people on the list pay a nominal fee to be included and have that cover your marketing costs.

What if you want to promote your business opportunity?

Moms are a great market - most would rather stay home if they could.

What if you could put a goodie bag together for day care directors to pass out (they would look like heros). It would contain flyers, coupons, samples of all kid-related things....

....including information on how they can earn some extra money from home! Put that same list together (pediatricians, child dentists, dance companies, etc.) to pay for your list. That is a win-win-win situation (you, the daycare and the participants!)
