Scams are not only related to networking companies, but the (1) get rich quick or (2) make money with no real work companies in general. It amazes me that on one hand people will know that it sounds too good to be true, yet on the other hand will go forward because it sounds easier and more lucrative than other companies.

For the past seven years I have worked as a Home Business Consultant. Too often, clients get me involved after the fact rather than before.

Just yesterday, I worked with two new clients. One lady had been laid off (had 3 children, including a baby) and wanted to stay home. However, her husband had also been laid off and had gotten a job with the state at much less money. She stumbled across a classified ad looking for home workers and ended up spending $300 for medical billing software (as soon as I hear medical billing, I cringe). Anyway, with a little internet research we pulled up a file as long as my leg about this company and the fact that they were a scam, never gave the refunds they promised, etc.

(As an aside, make sure people know a red flag is when a company says, You MUST use our product for 90 days before asking for a refund. The reason for this is that after 90 days, the credit card companies will not charge back the firm....so you are stuck. Now, if it says, you have UP to 90 days, you may be okay. But if it says, you MUST wait 90 days, they are planning on keeping your money.)

Now this lady was really desperate. She found out this was not a way to earn income, lost her $300 and STILL needed income. Ripe prospect, right?? Wrong! In my mind, if you are totally overwhelmed with making a payment NOW, you cannot have the proper mindset to start a business, as you will be concentrating more on the COST of the business than the POTENTIAL of future earnings.

So, I offered her our debt-reduction course at my cost and told her to start using it to reduce some of today's money pressures. We could talk about starting a legitimate business later. Now, I could have talked her into joining, but why? I am interested in building long term business partners, and did not feel it was in her best interests.

My second call yesterday was from a woman who attended one of these internet business seminars and came home $4000 poorer! It just never ceases to amaze me! People will drive all over town for weeks to save an extra $20 on the purchase of a car, yet will shell out $4000 without even checking the company out. Shed never had a web site and had no idea that easy to set up systems were available for less than $5 a month! We are set up to talk again today, because she was so upset with I showed her the reality from my research that she was simply too emotional to talk.

This is just two examples in one day! There are thousands of people getting ripped off daily - in MLM and non-MLM - every day. It is surprising that so many people do NO research on the company before spending their hard-earned dollars.

Unfortunately, before these experiences they were trusting. We talk to them after they have been ripped off....and now they don't even trust their mother!
