Did You Make a Difference This Year?©MMII, Debbi Bressler, ProfitCoaches.com While this is the time of year to reflect on your business
plans and set new goals for 2002, I think it is important to take a
moment to reflect on the things more important than money, the size
of your group, or your status. Whose life did you impact this year?
This has been a year in which people have really evaluated their value systems. They are realizing that it isnt about the job, the huge stock portfolio, the title, or the huge house in the Hamptons (all of which may actually have been LOST this year.) It is about making a difference. The legacy you will leave has nothing to do with your bank account or how your home is furnished. It has to do with your ability to impact the lives of others in a positive way. One of the reasons many people are attracted to this industry is because rather than a dog-eat-dog world, they are attracted to helping others. For many, this spills over into other areas of their lives. So.....what impact did you make this year? I will start: * Started a group helping children with learning disabilities build their self esteem. As some may know, my son is dyslexic and I can remember him telling me he was the dumbest kid in his class. Too many of these children are prey to gangs or other unsavory activities because they dont feel they fit in. While the schools can teach reading, writing and rithmetic, self esteem is critical. * Through my home business consultancy practice, I provide my services pro bono to those who are disabled. It is heart-wrenching to learn that some of these people are trying to live on $800 a month disability. For those who cannot leave their homes, the prospects for employment are very limited. * I counsel people on the need to develop an additional stream of income, thus not being entirely dependent on a job. My goal is to have people be able to cover their monthly expenses - and help them to develop a realistic view of this - so, should they lose their job, their families are not torn apart by financial stress. I still remember
my first grade teacher, Mrs. Kettle, who was such a positive influence
on my life. That is the kind of legacy I want. To know that I made a
difference. |
