Obviously, when this was written Martha was not under the scorn of the SEC for possible insider trading. I think everyone would say NO! to this question now..... Do You Want to be Martha Stewart?c2002, Debbi Bressler, ProfitCoaches.comThis past week I happened to catch an E! profile on Martha Stewart. She is a hugely successful BUSINESS WOMAN, but I actually felt sorry for her because that's all she had in her life - her business. Even her brother said she was totally driven and just didn't enjoy the fruits of her labor because she was on to the next conquest. So many people in networking (as well as other businesses) define success as being THE BEST, THE MOST, THE HIGHEST, THE WEALTHIEST. I am just wondering how many of you embrace these same concepts in defining yourselves as a success? Some things to consider: 1. Is business the primary focus in your life? Martha was telling a co-worker that she was late for work because her 8-year old daughter was crying, asking her mom to stay home with her because it was the little girls birthday. Martha was incredulous that the daughter would expect her to take off WORK for such a silly reason. Is business the FOCUS of your life? Or do you see your business as allowing you to FOCUS on the important things in your life....a hug, a smile, a giggle? 2. Will you work with anyone if they can help you achieve your monetary goals? As you probably know, Martha has a line of products in K-Mart. Martha, personally, would probably DIE if she had to socialize with blue light special people. Yet her Anything for a buck mentality does not allow her to see this as a contradiction. I talked to a lady who was very high up in another company. She could have brought me LOTS OF MONEY....but I chose to turn her down. I just could not see having to work with her (pretty negative personality) day in and day out. The $$ were not as important to me as my peace of mind, and I just did not feel she would fit into the culture of our group. If my focus was totally on earning as much money as I could, I would have snatched her up in a minute. 3. Martha has her fingers into everything she can - TV shows, web site, two magazines, licensing arrangements. Now, this is not a bad thing, don't get me wrong. But, the philosophy seems to be: get into everything I can and see what sticks. Is that your definition of recruiting? Do you try to sign up bodies and see who sticks? I suppose most of the regulars on this forum do not, but there are people who do that. I am sure it is a tiring experience. Better to build it a little slower - find those right people up front - and you will have a foundation to your business which cannot be shaken. Don't get me wrong, I like to make money the same as the next person. And my 12+ years of working full time from home are some of the happiest and most productive of my life. But the joy I have derived is more from the opportunity to earn an income while raising a family, taking a vacation whenever we wanted, being able to put my family first, and being able to retire and just travel the country in a few years. When Martha passes on to the great kitchen in the sky, she will be remembered for the THINGS she built. When I leave, I would rather be remembered for the lives I have impacted in a positive way....and that can be passed down through the generations. So....what do
