When I first started in the business, there were many who believed that if someone did not do business with you - you should NEVER do business with them and possibly sever ties altogether! (Personally knew a lady that quit speaking to her two children because they would not join her in the business.) Now, can you
imagine if everyone held this same attitude? I have several friends
who sell real estate. If I choose to use any of them when buying a house,
that means that the others should now having nothing to do with me.
How about stock brokers, insurance agents, etc?
While I certainly review my business with those professionals I feel are qualified to join my board, it would be foolish to sever ties with them simply because they didn't buy in to what I was doing. I would much rather use a top rated investment counselor who was NOT interested in my business, then a guy who has been working 31 days but is willing to join my business (because I will then use him). Another factor of the cult mentality is carrying the I will wait for an opportunity to mention my business a little too far. There is a woman in my professional women's group who is with an air purification MLM. You simply cannot have a normal conversation with this woman. Case in point: Saw her at a meeting a few weeks ago and commented on what a beautiful, sunshiny day it was. She proceeded to tell me that the sun was depleting the ozone layer, which would filter down and cause indoor pollution in my home, thus would I be interested in a free demo of her air purification system. The result? People avoid her at all costs. Her table is always the last to be filled. You know, life is W-A-Y too short to me. Our teams motto is, If you are not having fun, you are doing something wrong! I would hate to think of having to stoop to being less than 100% honest or becoming a talking billboard in order to be successful in this business. My way of doing business has served me well. Rather than recruiting the world, I look for a select few to add to my think tank and work through them to ensure everyone's success. And I can sleep at night doing it! |
