I have been a Home Business Consultant for seven years. My responsibilities including helping others select and develop a profitable business from home.

It is important, before even evaluating specific companies, to make sure multilevel, in general, is right for you. Some things to consider:

1. Do you have money to start a business properly? If you have been downsized, are down to your last $5, and need to pay the mortgage next month, do NOT join any networking company - get a job! You cannot afford to start any business without funds to give it the proper foundation.

2. Do you honestly have time for a business? The majority of people work an MLM on the side. You CAN work a business part time - you will fail if you work it in your spare time. If you are not willing to commit a minimum of 10-20 hours a week - on a consistent basis - you will never get it off the ground.

3. Are you afraid to talk to people? MLM is a people business. And, while many MLM's are internet/email based, you will be fooling yourself if you think you never have to talk with someone. If this makes you uncomfortable, and you don't believe you can ever overcome it, MLM may not be for you.

4. Do you take rejection personally? Understand that not everyone will be delighted at what you have to offer. If you tend to take everything personally, you will eventually put yourself out of business because you will fear the next rejection - and instead do nothing.

5. Are you willing to commit for a minimum of one year? Too many of my clients came to me after wasting their time and money following one get rich quick scheme after another. An MLM business should be treated like any other business. It takes time to establish yourself and grow your business. If you argent willing to give it more than 30-90 days, save your time and money.

6. Are you willing to follow a system? Many MLM companies have already found a system which works best in promotion of their specific products/services and opportunity. I have worked with entrepreneurs with traditional businesses - who had difficulty following someone else lead. If you tend to reject the advice of others, MLM may not be a good fit.

The problem most people face is that they don't know enough to know what they don't know. Make sense? If this is true, they can fall prey to those less than stellar companies and individuals out there who will help them paint the dream but wont tell them the cost of the brushes!
