PART TIME OR SPARE TIME?

Was on the phone with a friend of mine yesterday who told me she is closing down her business - to take a job. Now I talk to her several times a week and even though she could fingerpoint at all the reasons her dream did not succeed - the difference was in her hands all the time.

The problem she had was the same one that faces many in the networking industry.

IF YOU TREAT THIS LIKE A BIG BUSINESS,
YOU WILL MAKE BIG BUSINESS MONEY!

Simple as that.

When this gal worked for someone else she was told where to go and when to be there. Her work life was entirely mapped out for her. Years of this type of work took a real physical toll. Now she could own her own business and Be Her Own Boss.

TROUBLE IS SHE DID NOT TREAT IT LIKE A BIG BUSINESS.

Sometimes she would open the doors at 8:30 - sometimes 9:00. If she had errands to run, she would put a closed sign on the door. She was trying to fit running a business into the corners of her life.

IF YOU DONT KEEP REGULAR BUSINESS HOURS, YOU ARE NOT TREATING THIS AS A BIG BUSINESS.

Now when she was in her office, she was often on the phone visiting with people. We spent hours talking about what she was going to do instead of her doing it. At one point she was crying to me that she did not know how the rent was going to be covered. Then I found had she was due about $33,000 from billings she had not gotten around to doing yet!

IF YOU DONT PERFORM THE RIGHT ACTIVITIES DURING BUSINESS HOURS, YOU ARE NOT TREATING THIS AS A BIG BUSINESS.

Finally, she loved being the OWNER. She attended Chamber of Commerce meetings, etc. while complaining that her partner did not get out there and market to bring in some business. I dont know of a single occasion where she took the bull by the horns and went out and marketed herself. She was too good for that - she was the owner!

IF YOU WASTE ALL YOUR TIME IN MANAGEMENT MODE, YOU ARE NOT TREATING THIS AS A BIG BUSINESS.

Come on, you can start most home businesses for less than a nice night on the town. Problem is - many people see their investment in a business as something disposable. They will work at it when they have time - but never work on it.

So, if you are serious about this business, treat it as if you have $2 million invested. Picture that in six months the front page of your newspaper will carry one of the following headlines:

NANCY NETWORKER TREATS HER PART TIME BUSINESS AS A BIG BUSINESS AND ACHIEVES ASTOUNDING GROWTH!

or

SUSIE SPARETIME TREATS HER BUSINESS AS A LOW PRIORITY HOBBY AND BECOMES JUST ANOTHER WANNA BE STATISTIC!

Within any given company you have people with fantastic success stories, while others slink off into the night. The Four Components of Success are the same for all. Why doesnt everyone achieve the same results?

THE SUCCESSFUL TREAT THIS AS A BIG BUSINESS.

It's your choice, isnt it?
