Do You Use the Secrets of Infomercials?

Read an article in KIPLINGERS this month talking about the ingredients to a successful infomercial. Struck a cord, as what makes them a successful way of selling has been working for us for years!

Below are some comments from the article.

The whole goal - the key to selling - is education. If you don't answer questions, people don't buy. LESSON: Don't sell: share!

To answer questions, you first need someone to ask them, which is the role of the sidekick in an infomercial. Their task is to describe the problem - and to pose the kind of objections viewers might have.

LESSON: Address some of the common objections in the body of your presentation.

You highlight the features, link them to the benefits and - this separates the men from the boys - use the benefits to sell the results.

LESSON: Feature: You can earn an extra $25 a week - Benefit: You can save yourself time on the weekend by paying a lawn service. Results: You can take the kids to the park instead of sweating in the backyard.

Infomercials prod you to raise your expectations and then show you the very product that will let you achieve your higher goal.

WOW, DOES THIS SOUND FAMILIAR?

Infomercials also exploit our need for social validation. To that end, producers make use of testimonials from people.

DO YOU MAKE USE OF 3-WAY CALLS AND TESTIMONIALS IN YOUR BUSINESS?

Many products will haul out the inventor or product developer to make a pitch, figuring that the best way to sell a widget is to showcase the guy who thought of it in the first place.

MOST GOOD COMPANIES DO THIS THROUGH TAPES, CONFERENCE CALLS, OR WEB SITES.

Always study what other successful businesses are doing and see how you can apply it to your own business!
