Worried About Network Marketing?

There was recently a lengthy discussion on a forum regarding negative news coverage, etc. of the network marketing industry.

One of the comments made was I mean, DAMN IT, people, think about all the money, energy, and TIME it takes to make it in this game. HARD WORK! I am not saying don't do mlm, but I really feel the need to vent how I am beginning to feel about mlm. The money you are spending on mlm could be spent investing in an IRA, or something that wont fall out from underneath you, and leave you high and dry.

Here are my thoughts:

Dear Worried,

Yea, the reality of life is that there is good and evil.

With the growth of the internet comes a new medium in which to promote illegal and unethical businesses upon people. Their growth is based, in many cases, on peoples greed - why work at MLM #1 if MLM #2 will allow you to get filthy, stinkin rich for doing nothing?

So, for those who are worried....perform your due diligence on both the industry and the companies you are considering. Learn what questions to ask and how to verify the answers you receive.

Now, lets address the other issue:

Point 1: Think of all the money, energy and TIME many people have put into getting an education and becoming a good employee to make someone else the money. What is wrong with that picture? Many around us (including my husband) have been downsized. Our neighbor was just laid off after 21 years with his company - WITHOUT A DIME OF SEVERANCE. Do you think you should be worried if you have a job?

Point 2: I also have a business as a jewelry designer.
Money - $10,000 in inventory, books/tapes to learn and improve my skill, craft/art show fees.
Energy/Time - It can take years to develop an artistic skills and become known in the circuit. It takes many, many 12-hour days standing on your feet selling your wares.

I have paid hundreds of dollars in booth fees to have it rain the day of the show. Do you think they give a refund? Heck no! And I have practically had to nail my inventory down so it is not all stolen. I also have to pay to be able to accept credit cards, and I am out if someone writes me a hot check (which always increases when the cognomen is down)

And lets not even get into the paperwork issue on this one!

A friend of mine has a traditional store front business which is being very negatively impacted by the local and national economy. She is 8 months into a 3 year lease at $2500 a month just for the space - not including utilities, employees, etc. Do you think she should be worried?

Point 3: Networking businesses

1. Ten consistent hours a week performing the right activities can earn a part time person a significant income over time.
2. Company is responsible for accepting credit cards, shipping products, collecting and reporting sales tax, etc.
3. You can earn money quicker because no specialized training is required PRIOR to starting. You receive on the job training.
4. The amount of money it costs to begin a network marketing business is a joke compared to the cost of a college education or beginning a traditional business.
5. I put 53 miles on my car last month - and expanded into 3 more countries!

So, while I am not dismissing the need to be careful in your selection, I cant imagine a better place to be!
